Photoblog: Runners Mark Aleppo Massacre

Last month the Syrian city of Aleppo hosted a race organised by the local branch of the General Authority for Youth and Sports and sponsored by Nasa’em Sooriya Radio.

Forty competitors representing various organisations in Aleppo participated in the River Martyr’s Race on December 2, 2014.

The race commemorates the Quweiq river massacre which claimed the lives of more than 100 Syrian men and boys in 2013. Government forces are believed to have detained, tortured and executed the victims before dumping their bodies in the river.

The competitors ran three kilometres between the Bustan Al-Qasr neighborhood and Al-Kalasa, starting and finishing in front of the Martyr Qutayba Abu Younes Hospital.

Prizes were awarded to the first, second, and third place runners. First place went to Ahmad al-Saleh from the Youth Sports Centre, second place went to Bakry Sabbagh from the same Centre, and Ahmad Ghazal from the Salah Eddine Revolutionary Council was third.

Damascus Bureau correspondent Ammar Abdallah covered the race and took the following photographs:
