Continuous bombardment and shortage of rescue equipment threatens civilians in city’s opposition-held areas.

(Aleppo, Syria) - At around 8 am onThursday July 17, 2014, several barrel bombs were dropped on Aleppo’s Mashhad neighbourhood. The explosions took the lives of nine people from the same family, including a woman and two children.

The government’s aerial bombing campaign against opposition-controlled neighbourhoods has been on-going since January.

While rescue workers in Aleppo’s civil defence teams are doing their best to save people’s lives, they are hampered by a shortage of the equipment they need to clear the debris.

Najib, the civil defence director in western Aleppo, said that rescue teams needed lorries and bulldozers for their work. However, this equipment, which had belonged to local authorities, had been taken by the Free Syrian Army after government forces evacuated the area, he added.
